Achievements

Establishment of tropical and subtropical fruit orchard and development and use of the new potential fruit crops

        Tropical and subtropical fruit orchard was established in 1992 to offer teaching and research of faculty and students. Totally, 36 families, 115 genus and more than 400 varieties, which were collected either from local or abroad, are maintained. The orchard offers material for courses of “Pomology”, “Economic fruit crops”, “Plant propagation”and “Tropical and subtropical fruit crops” and identification of plant diseases and pests. The characteristic of this orchard is mainly on tropical new and rare fruit species. The results indicated that abiu, pitaya, chempedak, star apple, Brazil cherry, white sapote and pulasan are potential new fruit crops in Taiwan. Clones with large fruit size and good quality are selected for further trial. The technology of cultural management, forcing, and tree size control of selected fruit crops were developed and demonstrated for farmer.  New selected cloned or fruit crops were transferred to Kaohsiung, Taitung, and Haulien District Improvement Stations and growers for further evaluation of adaptability.

 

  1. Exploitation of fruit tree for ornamentals

  The fruit tree can also become beautiful ornamental plant and its economic benefits are higher than the production of the fruit itself. Most of fruit trees can be used as ornamentals, however, citrus, mytur family are better for training as bansai. 

 

  1. Culture and use of fruiting cactus

  More than 50 varieties and lines of cactus are collected in the orchard. Culture and use of various cacti are studied and released to farmers. The normal season of pitaya in Taiwan is from June to October. Between September and March, flowering can be induced by breaking the dark period with supplemental lighting between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00a.m., allowing off-season production from November to April. The fruits produced during the cool season in Taiwan are more desired in the market than fruits from summer crops because the off-season fruits are larger and sweeter.

 

  1. Selection and management of abiu

  More than 400 seedlings of abiu, introduced from Philippines and Hawaii, are evaluated. Five clones with large fruit (more than 500g in average), high yield and quality are selected and will be released. The flowering behaviors and fruit growth during different seasons are studied. The quality standard and maturity index have been evaluated and recommended. The method of forcing year round production is conducting.  

 

  1. Selection and management of star apple

        One clone with fruit weight of 300g and good quality is selected for evaluation. Fruit growth and propagation were studied.

 

Forcing longan for all year round production

Forcing longan flower throughout the year by application of potasiun chlorate are developed by the laboratory. This technology was transferred and released to farmers and other countries with longan production such as Australia, China, Thailand, Hawaii.

 Alternate bearing is a barrier to most of longan production, which is affected by previous winter temperature for flower initiation. The temperature requirement for flower initiation of longan is between lychee and rambutan. Flower initiation in tropical area is less for warm winter, which in turn limits the distribution of longan in some warmer subtropical areas. Development of forcing flower initiation by potassium chlorate, which was first developed in Taiwan by this lab, has extended the production area and also assured the regular yield in longan in the world. Application of potassium chlorate for flower induction has changed the pruning methods for longan. Heavy pruning after harvest to control tree size and following application of potassium chlorate has been utilized practically.

 

Release of Lychee variety

      ‘Tainung No. 1, 3, 5, and 7’ lychee varieties were released with the cooperation of Dr. Jer-Way Chang, Chia-Yi Agricultural Research Station.
